🧺 Traditional Methods We Still Use Today

At Spice Peaks, our commitment to authenticity means more than just offering pure, high-quality spices — it means preserving the time-tested traditions that have shaped Sri Lanka’s spice heritage for generations. While technology has changed the world, many of our core practices remain deeply rooted in the traditional methods passed down through our communities.

Hand-Harvesting with Care

One of the most important traditions we continue to uphold is hand-harvesting. Whether it’s red chili, Ceylon cinnamon, or black pepper, we rely on skilled hands to pick each spice at the perfect time. This personal touch not only preserves the integrity of the plants but also ensures that only the best-quality spices make it to your kitchen.

Sun-Drying Under the Tropical Sky

Instead of using artificial drying methods, we still sun-dry our spices — just as our ancestors did. Spread out on mats in open spaces, the spices absorb natural sunlight over several days. This method enhances flavor, aroma, and shelf life, giving you a final product that’s rich, vibrant, and truly natural.

Hand-Sorting and Grading

Once dried, our spices are carefully hand-sorted and graded to maintain consistency and quality. Unlike mechanical sorting, this method allows experienced eyes to detect subtle imperfections and separate the finest spices. It’s a labor-intensive process, but it’s one we value deeply.

Traditional Cinnamon Peeling

Our cinnamon, grown in the fertile lands of Pahala Vitiyala in Sri Lanka’s Southern Province, is still peeled using traditional knives by skilled peelers. The delicate, paper-thin quills are rolled and sun-dried, preserving both the aroma and the craftsmanship that Ceylon Cinnamon is renowned for.

Supporting Local Knowledge

By continuing to use traditional methods, we also preserve the cultural wisdom and livelihoods of local farmers and artisans. These practices are more than just techniques — they’re stories of resilience, identity, and pride, carried forward with every batch of spice we produce.

At Spice Peaks, tradition isn’t something we look back on. It’s something we live by — every day.
